Striped Pajamas
When the prisoners arrived at the concentration camps, they were stipped of their valuable, clothes, glasses, possessions, and all their own personal belongings. When they had their clothes taken away, they were given a uniform, this uniform is now referred to as striped pajamas. The pajamas had fat vertical stripes that were white and light blue. They were the only thing that the jewish and other prisoners had to wear all day, everyday. They got new clothes very, very rarely, about every six weeks, because they had to work and sleep in them. Men would wear a vest, trousers, a hat and a coat. Women would always be supplied a smock type dress. They both were decorated with blue stripes. The prisoners were given wooden clogs or leather clogs. They weren’t supplies with socks, so the prisoners would often times get sores and rubs on their feet from the clogs, and because the grounds were extremely dirty,it would lead to an infection, which in severe cases even led to death. They had a number and an upside down triangle printed on their pajamas to identify who they were(everyone had an identification number) and then the triangle was used to signify the reason for their imprisonment. Criminals all received a green upside down triangle, political prisoners received red ones, homosexuals got pink triangles, Jehovah’s Witnesses wore a purple one, and lastly, asocials received a black upside down triangle. In most concentration camps, the Jewish people were given a different colored star. They often times had a yellow upside down triangle, or a Star of David on their clothing. Sometimes, they were given armbands that bore the Star of David as an alternative.
